Your Life As Told By Amazon Order History

by Sean on July 15, 2010

Not too long ago I was poking around the innards of my Amazon account and stumbled upon the order history section. Apparently (news to me at least) I can browse through my purchased as far back as 2000. Since there are accompanying graphics, flipping through the years is almost like reading a visual autobiography. I wish the history went back further, though. Would love to see what I was ordering the last few years of the 90′s. Amazon hit it out of the park with the Amazon Prime program. I’ve definitely ordered more since I’ve been a member. If you shop on Amazon, the membership is a must have.

There’s the annual Christmas gift purchases. My family members’ changes in taste represented by the DVDs and CD’s purchased in December. There’s the momentary desires to be a screenwriter, a novelist, & a business owner. All impulse purchases, even if the dreams are still real. Thomas Guide – San Diego is a memory of the newness of California and the excitement of living in the most beautiful spot in the Lower 48. All of these things bring up vivid memories of where I’ve been and how I got to today.

Here are a few highlights.

December 2000

The Art of the Matrix

The Matrix blew me away the first time I saw it in the theater. It totally changed the way I thought about cinema. Like Nivana was to music, The Matrix ushered in a new era of home movie watching. The release of this DVD helped to push the format into the mainstream. From time to time I still pull The Art of the Matrix off the shelf to take in the Wachowski Brothers’ dark vision of humanity’s ability to survive and struggle with free will. To this day I’m still disappointed about how the story wrapped up, but I take solace that I’m not the only one.

Fast Food Nation

Heading fast into the beginning of my muckraking and deep political opinion stage. If you haven’t read this gem, do so now. But be prepared to never think about the food you buy in a restaurant, or grocery store, quite the same way again.

December 2005

Harrington on Hold Em Vol. 2

Ah, the foray into poker. Win one tournament and you’re the next Chris Moneymaker. But then I realized that on-the-fly math isn’t my strong suit. I still enjoy a game once in awhile.

March 2006

The Wire Season One

If you ever do one thing in your life, watch the entire series of The Wire. Start with season one and don’t stop until the last scene of season five. The gritty depiction of life and death in Baltimore is, and will always be, David Simon’s masterpiece. Best characters and story lines in television history. You’ll thank me for this one later.

October 2007

Watching Baseball Smarter

I have always been a Cleveland Indians fan. Heck, my favorite team as Tribe ’85. I loved Bret Butler and Joe Carter. Fast forward to the 2007 playoff run. The excitement surrounding the Indians made me want to learn more about the rules of the game. That didn’t last long.

June 2008

Canon CanoScan 8800F Scanner

In order to help my with wedding slideshow projects, I bought this scanner. It has helped me create awesome snapshots of family life. If you ever need a scanner to backup all of your photos, this is the one to buy. More than a cheap model and a lot less than the most expensive ones. It’s built like a tank and will last me for years.

March 2009

Molto Italiano

Always love to cook. Around the time Maeve was born, I wanted to start a cookbook collection in the kitchen. Recipes from my favorite chefs. None are better than Mario Batali. Learning to cook the Italian dishes found within these pages will generate memories of tasty family dinners.

December 2009

Apple TV

The movie catalog available might not be the biggest. And it might not do everything you want it to do. But if you have a vast iTunes library filled with movies, TV shows & music or a computer filled with photos, this might be what you need. We wanted something in the living room to serve up all of this. This was the best option. The simple UI and easy way to play your music for parties make it a nice addition to the living room. The Apple TV has become one of the most used devices in our house. Now if only Verizon would sell the iPhone.

July 2010

Wusthof Knife Sharpener

The latest purchase. Replacing a terrible set of Kitchen Aid knives has been a priority. The first replacement knife (Wusthof chef’s knife) has gotten a lot of use. It’s funny to see how I have moved away from only purchasing things for myself. Most of what I now buy helps create enjoyable moments with others. A kitchen knife sharpener is proof of that.

It’s pretty neat to take a look back at 10 years of purchases. Amazon makes it easy for everyone to stroll down memory lane. Take ten minutes and you’ll see.
